Let's Learn the Dotted-Quarter Note

A dotted-quarter note is 11/2 beats in duration, as is illustrated in this diagram.

A dot added to any note adds one half of the original duration of the note. In the case of a quarter note, which has a duration of one beat, the dot adds another half of a beat. So the dotted-quarter note in this case is 11/2 beats.
